The Vice President of Risk Management is responsible for leading Risk Management operations including the development and execution of risk management strategies, policies, and procedures for Workers’ Compensation, Commercial Property, and/or Liability customers that are aligned with the company’s goals and objectives. The focus of Risk Management is to evaluate the risk of loss exposures and controls in place, conduct site visits and insurance surveys of existing and prospective clients, provide assistance in the recommendation process, assist clients in their management of change, and aid the underwriters in the selection and segmentation of accounts.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Establishes Risk Management vision and strategy that supports company operations and business objectives.
- Drives execution of complex strategic risk management policies and programs with independence, ownership, and autonomy. Partners with stakeholders to develop and maintain risk management policies.
- Accountable for business results of the Risk Management department with respect to customer service, risk mitigation and ensuring consistent execution of strategic initiatives that aid in overall profitability of the company.
- Develops and leads a Team of Risk Management leaders to ensure the effective execution of risk management strategies and contribute to the goals and objectives of the Company by providing professional loss control services to Underwriting, Claims, Agency Partners, and Policyholders.
- Provides guidance, support, and recommendations to senior leadership on strategic decisions related to risk management.
- . Collaborates with technical specialists and the management staff to deliver value-added services and promote the very best quality of analysis and service.
- Assures hiring of technically qualified field staff. Interviews personnel from a technical standpoint to determine their ability to carry out job functions and assure assignments to proper employment category.
- Prepares the annual budget using published criteria that will meet the needs of the department and the company. Controls expenditures to assure maximum return and value for dollars expended. Monitors budgetary conformity to assure budgets are maintained within normal limitations. Reports to senior management all actions taken on budget variances.
- Tracks trends, identifies metrics, and evaluates work against established risk management standards. Identifies problems and recommends/implements appropriate action, including acquisition and termination of personnel.
- Manages and develops a framework for management staff to provide services acceptable in quality to maintain a profitable book of business and acceptable loss ratio. Interfaces with senior management to provide technical information and support.
- Ensures Regulatory compliance of department for all states where the Company writes business.
Serves as liaison with Underwriting, Claims, and Agency partners to promote effective communication and operations.
- Oversees the development and maintenance of technical guidelines and the technology used to support our Risk Management operations. Drives consistent best practices and guidelines.
- Works closely with Underwriting to support key initiatives, interpreting technical criteria to help increase retention and reduce costs, creating new opportunities, and providing ad hoc and formal training.
- Periodically prepares department reports for senior management on activities and accomplishments of the department.
- Researches highly technical issues to provide in-depth information to departmental personnel. Promulgates information in an understandable format for loss control field personnel and policyholders.
- Communicates with policyholders on issues of recommendation compliance and completion. Suggests meaningful measures to comply at minimal cost or business disruption. Handles difficult policyholder or Agent relations while retaining company posture on recommendation compliance.
- Creates technical publications to educate and inform agents and policyholders of the latest occupational safety and health trends and issues.
- Manages company vendors to ensure quality reports and cost-effective operations.
Leads and manages a team of Risk Management personnel.
- Provides direction to the Risk Management team. Communicates Mission, Values, and other organization operating principles to direct and indirect reports. Drives a culture that promotes collaboration, innovation, performance, agility, diversity, and inclusion.
- Establishes and maintains the overall work cadence and, in partnership with department Leadership, ensures performance and outcomes strive for excellence in delivery and customer experience. Ensures that the entire team is engaged and that leadership practices for the department encourage development, recognition, and retention.
- Establishes and holds team accountable to and adheres to hiring criteria, on-boarding, and training requirements for incoming staff.
- Oversees the performance management and development process for team members and performs performance management duties, development planning and coaching for direct reports.
- Acts as a resource for team members to answer questions and solve complex problems.
- Manages budget, technology and other resources, workload, and customer requests for services. Ensures adherence to all Company policies and procedures and Compliance responsibilities.
- Ensures data quality, adherence to security guidelines, profitability and other risk-related metrics for self and members of the team.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Directly supervises employees within the Risk Management team and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with company policies and applicable laws.
- These responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; conducting performance and salary reviews; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; coaching, mentoring, and developing team members to further their skills and knowledge; creating and monitoring development plans; setting performance expectations/goals; forecasting staffing needs and planning for peak times and absences; enforcing department policies and procedures.
WHAT YOU BRING TO THE ROLE
- Bachelor’s degree from four-year College or university required with a major or emphasis in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 15 years of related experience in the risk management or safety profession required.
- Insurance industry experience required.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Professional Engineer in Safety (PE), or Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and Associate in Loss Control Management (ALCM) and Certified Hazard Control Manager (CHCM), or an equivalent recognized safety designation.
- Additional certifications in Hazardous Materials, Hazard Control Management, Product Safety, or similar fields are highly desirable.
- Education in Industrial Hygiene or comparable field preferred.
- Valid, current driver’s license is required.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Advanced knowledge of risk management policies, processes, and methodologies.
- Insurance industry acumen, required.
- Knowledge or training on commercial package.
- Strategic orientation, managing vision and purpose, developing organizational capability.
- Excellent computer skills with extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office 360 (Word; Excel; PowerPoint; Microsoft Outlook) and other computer-related programs.
- Strong influencing and communications skills and ability to work across multiple areas of company and industries.
- Ability to communicate in English.
- Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
- Ability to complete a department budget; determine pay increases. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Demonstrated leadership skills that include the ability to collaborate and influence others.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position operates in an office environment and requires the frequent use of a computer, telephone, copier, and other standard office equipment. Work may also include travel to risk sites, with tours of the insured’s premises, which involves exposure to a variety of industrial equipment, personnel, material, and operations. Potential exposure to environmental hazards at plant sites. Overnight travel may be required. Requires driving short, intermediate, and long distances using private or Company provided vehicle. The noise level in certain work environments can be excessive, and employees may be exposed to significant sound levels on job sites or at plant locations. Noise ranges may be in excess of 85 decibels, necessitating wearing of personal protective equipment. Use of safety glasses and shoes may be required at some sites. Clothing may be specific for certain environments.
COMPENSATION
The salary range for this position, 200k – 240k, is exclusive of fringe benefits and potential bonuses. If hired at ICW Group, your final base salary compensation will be determined by factors such as skills, experience and/or education. In addition, we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as part of any final offer. We typically do not hire at the maximum of the range in order to allow for future and continued salary growth. We also offer a substantial benefits package outlined below.
