Description
The Helper – Substation Apprentice 3 works as a member of a crew in the performance of tasks associated with the operation, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting and repair of high voltage substation equipment and controls; power circuit breakers, power transformers, control batteries and chargers, metal-clad switchgear, high voltage busses, fire protection systems, low voltage station service equipment, capacitor banks, and disconnect switches.
Duties
- Experience demonstrating skill using basic math skills (such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
- Read and understand Blueprints with little direction.
- Use of appropriate power tools (i.e., pipe threader, conduit bender etc.) and hand tools (i.e., drill, screwdriver etc.).
- Properly Measure, cut, assemble, and install electrical conduits, cable, and duct banks.
- Have the knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets, their location and how to use.
- Always follow rules of safe conduct.
- Terminate wire with little or no direction.
- Set Steel with little direction
- Measure, cut and install jumpers.
- Set equipment with little direction.
- Measure and cut buss with little direction.
- Heat, Bend and Install grounding leads and pull wire through conduit
- Install control and distribution apparatus, such as switches, relays, and circuit breakers panels.
- Work with high and low voltage systems.
- Help test continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components, using test instruments, such as ohmmeter, battery and buzzer, and oscilloscope.
- Have the knowledge and skills to effectively use oxygen/acetylene flame cutting equipment.
- Recognize various materials used in the craft and have the working knowledge of appropriatematerial handling techniques.
- Ability to assist in performing and repairing circuit breakers, transformers, tap changers, protectiverelays.
- Ability to assist in correctly installs, inspects, and maintain substation equipment.
- Ability to assist in testing and troubleshooting substation equipment using appropriate techniques.
- Ability to safely utilize demolition procedures.
- Be able to select and safely use appropriate equipment which may include (but are not limited to) man-lifts, forklifts, and company trucks to layout and install ground grid, spread rock.
- Ability to work in small, cramped areas, in variety of weather conditions, and in heights of greater than 20 feet.
- Ability and willingness to display skills and techniques necessary to distinguish exposed live parts from other parts of electric equipment.
- Ability and willingness to skills and techniques necessary to determine the nominal voltage of exposed live parts.
- Ability and willingness to determine minimum approach distances in relation to the voltage(s) to which the qualified employee will be exposed to and the skills and techniques to maintain those distances.
- Ability and willingness to employ the proper use of the special precautionary techniques, personal protective equipment, insulating and shielding materials, and insulated tools for working on or near exposed energized parts of electric equipment.
- Ability and willingness to recognize electrical hazards to which the employee may be exposed and the skills and techniques necessary to control or avoid such hazards.
- Experience demonstrating safe fall protection and prevention practices.
Qualifications
- 1 1/2 years of experience working on substations or as an electrician or similar craft as a helper or a combination of work experience and training.
- Working knowledge and performs tasks under or with little direction of the substation field of work.
- Extensive working knowledge of the substation field of work.
- Understand and carry out oral instructions
- Read and carry out simple written instructions
- Read and carry out complicated written instructions
- Work at varying heights
- Read and interpret detail prints and documents
- Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions, decimals and metrics to calculate surfaces, volumes, weights and measures
- Operate complex equipment and power tools
- Operate small equipment and power tools
