What to Expect
Tesla’s Cell Engineering group is looking for a highly motivated engineer to lead manufacturing engineering efforts integral to Tesla’s dry battery process. This individual should be an experienced engineer with experience commissioning new equipment and complex processes. This hire will be responsible for global equipment. In addition, this individual will lead a global equipment/process team with significant importance to the dry mixing process wherein new equipment is proposed, tested, improved, and implemented globally.
This hire will join a cross-functional engineering team responsible for the development lifecycle and launch to manufacturing of cell electrode mixing. You will be the key interface to our operations and maintenance teams at all sites globally as a mixing manufacturing engineering expert. You will mentor more junior engineers and train them to become effective.
What You’ll Do
- This role will invent, develop, scale up and optimize battery manufacturing equipment, focused heavily on anode and cathode mixing. This role will be particularly focused on anode processes at first. In addition, this individual will help to integrate this equipment into our overall anode and cathode processes
- Lead a global anode process equipment expert team
- Lead commissioning of new equipment and processes and anode and cathode dry mixing
- Thoroughly learn and understand existing processes and equipment to address ongoing technical challenges and identify step-change improvement opportunities, including blank-slate concepts
- Lead design, development, and implementation of equipment modifications, improvements, and next generation tools from proof of concept through to full scale production to enable improved battery performance and/or cost
- Validate and characterize performance of newly implemented designs to establish controls for critical parameters and improve process robustness
- Execute DoEs to optimize process conditions
- Lead mixing vendor development projects
- Use data analysis tools to interpret and present validation data
- Optionally lead 1-4 young engineers/interns
What You’ll Bring
- The ideal candidate should be ready to push their limits, as they join a highly motivated and capable team to make unbelievable things become reality
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in mechanical, chemical, civil engineering or equivalent
- 10+ years of experience in engineering
- Hands on experience commissioning new processes/equipment
- Powder manufacturing or battery materials experience preferred
- Mechanical equipment design preferred
- Prior experience in operations desirable
- Preferred advanced-level 3D CAD design experience
- Proven strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and ability to apply them to equipment design and process development for high volume manufacturing
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to perform basic FEA for design validation
- Structured thinking and problem-solving abilities
- Desire to participate and be a leader in an exciting team
