What to Expect
Tesla is looking for a highly motivated manufacturing engineer to create manufacturing equipment and processes for our cutting edge Battery products. Battery development is at the heart of our company and this is an exciting opportunity work directly the central challenge with electric vehicles – battery cost. Tesla is a demanding and fast-paced environment where you will work with a highly motivated team on extremely challenging projects.
In addition to developing manufacturing equipment and processes, Manufacturing Engineers work with cross-functional teams throughout the entire product lifecycle. You will work closely with Design Engineering, Quality and Production to take Battery design changes and new Battery designs from initial concept through prototype development and into full production.
What You’ll Do
- Drive ramp of exciting new line by characterizing baseline performance and capability of each system and drive actions to maintain or improve performance as measured by product quality and tool availability
- Development of the manufacturing process to use the equipment and ensure that all equipment, processes and methodologies comply with applicable standards, company policy and all Health and Safety Laws, Acts, Regulations and Codes
- Generate and maintain documentation including machine and process specification, drawing, BOM, spare part, PFMEA, control plan, process flow chart
- Develop manufacturing metrics and key performance indices and implement metrology to measure all critical quality and safety related process items and capture in data base system
- Design layout of the production workstations for product flow, ergonomics, and efficiency
- Develop manufacturing equipment, fixtures, and processes
- Drive Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and develop specifications for custom automation equipment
- Closely collaborate with external equipment integrators on custom automation equipment development
- Manage external equipment integrators from equipment development through buyoff
- Validate and characterize new equipment and fixtures for production implementation
- Generate machine qualification checklist and manage to install, commission and start-up equipment balancing speed and safety
- Create manufacturing introduction and deliver training to operations and maintenance technicians to ensure and seamless handover of new equipment
What You’ll Bring
- Experience developing manufacturing processes for new and unique products
- Experience transitioning products from prototype to mass production
- Experience developing automated manufacturing equipment, fixturing and tooling in 3D (SolidWorks preferred, Catia is also a plus)
- Experience drawing machine or production line layout in 2D (AutoCAD preferred)
- Experience introducing new equipment and new processes into a production environment (APQP is a plus)
- Extensive project management experience
- Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent
- Minimum 6 years of hands-on experience in manufacturing engineering (10+ years of experience preferred)
- Multiple new equipment installations and new product startups
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Aptitude to learn and incorporate new technologies
- Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally
- Experience in high volume manufacturing involving one or more of these areas is highly desired:
- Roll to roll polymer extrusion, winding/rewinding, calendering/pressing, lamination, web handling
- Stamping, Steel rolling/milling
- Aeroplane/Rocket engine hydraulics, mechanics
- Battery manufacturing (li-ion, electrode, cathode, anode or other similar chemistries)

Expected Compensation
$80,000 – $258,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
