Burns & McDonnell has an exciting opportunity based out of our Chicago Office for a Field Civil Engineer. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to work on construction projects supporting our Transportation group. Most of the project work would be construction management as an owner representative for clients such as IDOT, the Illinois Tollway, and CDOT. There will also be project work opportunities for alternate delivery construction managing civil site construction elements on larger projects. Transportation projects could include rural roadway, expressways and bridges. Civil site work could include power plants, substations and a multitude of facility work.
Responsibilities
- Ensure the work of the Contractor is built to the plans and specifications of the contract documents.
- Identify and inform the project engineer or supervisor of observed problems and issues
- Field measurements & documentation of pay quantities.
- Generate daily activity reports describing progress of the work.
- Assists the Resident Engineer with construction contract administration matters
- Reviews shop drawings, submittals, plans, specifications, estimates, and change order requests.
- Expected to work at project field offices or on site at the project.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, or related degree, from an ABET accredited program and 3 years of civil engineering experience, consulting preferred or a bachelor’s degree in civil or related engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and 3 years of civil engineering experience, consulting preferred.
- Excellent written & verbal communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- This position would require experience at managing field engineering tasks as related to implementation of transportation and civil site design in the field.
- The ability to work in a fast-paced construction environment and interact with multiple entities on a management level including the contractor, owner, utility entities and commercial/residential stakeholders is a must.
- Preferred experience with IDOT, Illinois Tollway, CDOT or CTA, but other relevant experience will be considered.
- Must be self-starter capable of devising new approaches to encountered problems.
- Tracking toward a PE license is a plus.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- In addition, must meet standards to qualify for and maintain the Company’s vehicle driving privileges as outlined in the Company’s Motor Vehicle Safety Policy.
