Position Summary:

Functioning as a team lead, ensures that University design and construction policy effectively supports and advances the goals of its capital program, in conformance with campus standards, contract documents, and all applicable state and federal codes and regulations. Implements policies, procedures, (contract) documents and code implementation related to design and construction (including building code and safety regulations) and the related accountability framework to evaluate effectiveness. Counsel senior leaders, providing highly technical advice related to design and construction. Exercises experienced judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results, and may provide guidance to other functional managers, project leaders, and / or analysts. Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Project Management, the Sr. Project Manager manages and directs the execution of capital construction projects and the associated life-cycle development for projects valued at up to $700M. Directs and coordinates the implementation of program, project and related management controls, documentation, reports, records and other established tools and processes with an emphasis on the management and control of program and project scope, cost and schedule. Exercises discretionary judgment to solve managerial and / or project related problems pertaining to the planning, design and construction phases of projects (i.e. schedules, budgets, change orders and disputes). Supervises and monitors workload of assigned Project Managers, Associate Project Managers and Assistant Project Managers. Coordinates program and project management and execution activities with department staff, other UC Irvine departments (i.e. Capital Planning, Campus & Environmental Planning, Budget Office, etc.), user departments and local agencies. Coordinates with the Contracts team to acquire, manage and maintain strict accountability for design, construction and project support services necessary to the accomplishment of program and project execution. Updates Director of Construction & Inspection on operational and procedural matters.

Required:
8+ years’ experience in construction project management or related field.
BA/BS degree in Architecture or related/relevant degree which aligns with core business of Design/Build or 4+ years’ experience working in Architectural, Engineering, Construction or Design professional industry.
Highly effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including effective negotiation skills and well-developed political acumen. In-depth understanding of contract documents related to the design and construction industry. Capable of understanding the University organization, including its infrastructure, rules, regulations, policies and short and long range strategic building plans. In-depth knowledge of planning, design and construction procedures, industry practices, and / or deep expertise in a highly specialized and critical discipline. Demonstrated knowledge of the California Building Code. Experience with similar responsibilities and a track record of proven results, in terms of quality construction, as well as solid budget and schedule adherence. Advanced experience implementing policies related to design and construction. Possess working knowledge of design, contracts, design-build processes, change orders, cost estimating, budgets, bidding process, dispute resolution, arbitration and scheduling. Knowledge of Design-Build processes with the ability to promote its purposes and practices within the architectural and construction industry. Advanced analytical, organizational and problem recognition / avoidance / resolution skills. Ability to consistently use original and creative thinking skills to analyze a wide variety of policy ramifications and situational problems and to offer a range of options for resolution. Options will extend beyond existing boundaries of established concept and practices and will offer insightful consideration of ramifications to team members and the university. Advanced team building and facilitation skills. Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access), MS Project.
Preferred:
MA/MS level degree which aligns with core business of Design/Build (preferred).
License to practice in at least one of the following professions: architecture or engineering, (preferred).
Completion of PM course through UCI or equivalent, (preferred).
Previous experience using Revit, Bluebeam and AutoCAD
Special Conditions Required:
DBIA certification (within one year of hire) and maintaining certification Must have a valid CA Driver’s License and participate in DMV Pull-notice program May be required to work outside of regularly scheduled shift Must be able to wear PPE Must comply with UC vaccine policy.
