What to Expect
Tesla’s Battery Minerals & Metals Team is looking for a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer (Fluids/Thermal) to work on a critical challenge facing the world’s energy transition – Battery Cathode materials.
As a Mechanical Engineer in our Battery Minerals & Metals Team, you will lead the development and deployment of new-to-the world chemical production processes and equipment. Responsibilities will include designing new processing facilities to produce key intermediates in the battery materials value chain. A successful team member will lead projects starting from the concept through to design, install, integration, ramp, and handover to operations teams.
What You’ll Do
- Develop flowsheets and detailed designs for chemical processing facilities, industrial scale utility systems, and H-rated air handling systems
- Develop thermodynamic and technoeconomic models of chemical production processes to identify lowest cost configurations
- Identify opportunities for systems optimization to improve heat recovery, reduce utility demands, and maximize throughput and yield
- Interface with equipment suppliers through concept development, system design, detailed design, procurement, installation, and acceptance testing
What You’ll Bring
- Evidence of exceptional ability, including a strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and demonstrated ability to leverage this understanding to solve challenging problems
- Understanding of heat transfer fundamentals and design and optimization of heat recovery systems
- Understanding of central utility systems and integration of utilities with manufacturing process equipment
- 3+ years in chemical or mechanical process design. Examples may include:
- Execution of engineering projects from concept development through commissioning and ramp-up
- Developing PFDs, developing P&IDs, equipment sizing, technology evaluations, writing process control narratives, etc
- Developing technical specifications and equipment datasheets for equipment RFQs
- Process modeling and simulation using software such as Aspen HYSYS, HSC Sim, SysCAD, OLI or similar
- Experience with the following industries and/or production environments:
- Large-scale mining or pyrometallurgy
- Large-scale chemical production processes
- Engineering procurement and construction
- Industrial manufacturing
