Job Summary
The Development and Grants Department is the central oversight for external funding opportunities from competitive grants and donor prospects. The Competitive Grants Manager coordinates the search for potential external funding sources from government, foundation, and corporate grants. This position works closely with academic leadership to identify school and program instructional funding needs, and strategically align with the district’s goals and long-term objectives. Telework options may be available for qualified employees, with some in-office attendance required weekly. The manager reports directly to the director of Development. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).
Job Requirements
The following is required:
- A bachelor’s degree in a related field. Five years of experience in the field of grant management or preparation of grant proposals may be considered in lieu of degree requirement.
The following are preferred:
- Experience in grantsmanship, planning and managing projects, operating standard office equipment, preparing and maintaining accurate records, and utilizing Microsoft Office Suite.
- Must have a high level of organization, coordination, writing, and human relations skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, maintain flexibility, and follow projects through to completion.
- Knowledge of organizational management practices, record keeping and report writing.
- Experience and success in project or program implementation and management.
- Ability to work independently and to schedule workloads to meet deadlines.
- Ability to demonstrate sensitivity and responsiveness to the needs of the cultural, ethnic, and minority groups within the school community.
- Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to motivate other professionals and project participants.
Essential Job Functions
- Strategically plans for grant writing and the pursuit of external funding opportunities for ASD.
- Monitors applicable government regulations and application deadlines and provides compliance training and education for grant program directors.
- Identifies and specifies school and program instructional funding needs and works with instructional staff to develop grants or other funding sources which address those needs.
- Prepares grant proposals according to ASD priorities to include writing, preparing budgets, and submitting on behalf of ASD departments and staff.
- Monitors and reviews the quality and appropriateness of competitive grants submitted by ASD.
- Works with project managers and ASD administrators to help ensure proper administration of competitive grants in the areas of program, budget, documentation, adherence to regulations, and submissions of reports.
- Supervises department clerical staff as designated by the director of Development.
- Trains district employees, conducting staff development in all phases of grant seeking and grant writing as assigned by the director of Development.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the Anchorage School District leadership, staff, and community.
Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
