Job Summary:
A cable locator, also known as a utility locator, is responsible for identifying and marking the precise location of underground cables, including fiber optic lines. Specialized equipment is used to pinpoint the path, ensuring construction projects avoid damaging these utilities during excavation work. This often involves reading utility maps, interpreting as-built drawings, and physically marking the cable locations on the ground with flags or paint.

Responsibilities:
- Respond promptly to incoming locate requests from CFTOD
- Understand utility maps and plans to understand the potential route of underground cables
- Utilize specialized locating equipment to detect the signal from buried cables
- Accurately mark the position of located cables on the ground using flags, paint, or other visible markers
- Adhere to strict safety guidelines while working in construction zones, including traffic control and proper personal protective equipment
- Document located cable positions, including depth and any irregularities found, in a standardized reporting system
- Communicate clearly regarding the location of underground utilities
- Assist in installing and troubleshooting CAT6A and copper cabling
- Assist in troubleshooting AM&CS circuits
- Performed confined space attendant duties
- Pump utility access holes as necessary
- Aggressively ensure traffic safety when working in active roadways
- Attend vital training programs to stay updated and ensure job competence and safety, including confined space training
Basic Qualifications:
- Technical knowledge: Understanding of underground utility systems, including cable types
- Ability to operate cable locating equipment accurately
- Experience interpreting utility maps and as-built drawings to identify cable routes
- Familiarity with mapping software and Microsoft products
- Ability to walk long distances, work outdoors in various weather conditions, ability to bend and kneel to access underground locations, and lift 50 pounds
- Attention to detail: Precisely marking cable locations to avoid damage during excavation
- Communication skills: Effectively communicating with stakeholders
- Must have a valid Florida’s Driver’s License
- High School diploma or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications:
- 2 years’ experience in the cable industry
- Associate degree or equivalent
