The Director of Accounting is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing all financial reporting and accounting activities within the Southwest region. This senior-level position involves managing a team of accounting professionals, ensuring the accuracy and compliance of financial statements, and implementing strategic financial planning and budgeting processes. This role is based out of McCarthy’s Southwest office in Phoenix, Arizona.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for the overall performance of the accounting department including accurate and timely financial reporting, attention to detail and regional support to project teams.
- Manage 1-2 accountants who support project teams, cost plus billings and AP/AR.
- Lead the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes for the southwest region.
- Review general ledger accounts and prepare journal entries.
- Prepare business unit and regional financial statements, budgets, and work in process schedule.
- Proactively monitor and report on project performance, regional cash position, costs, and percentage of completion.
- Understand the scope and areas of work included within the construction contracts.
- Work closely with operations and finance teams on day-to-day issues and trouble shooting.
- Assist project teams with various accounting and finance related inquiries and tasks.
- Support our self-perform groups with accounting, forecasting, and troubleshooting.
- Track and review overhead budget-to-actual variances with business unit/department leaders.
- Promote a service oriented, customer friendly approach to our accounting department and facilitate timely resolution of issues and questions within the region.
- Assist with annual year-end audit and sales tax audits, ensuring all information and documentation is reviewed and provided in a timely manner.
- Collaborate with Corporate Finance Group on tax, license, and compliance issues.
- Work with joint venture partners to ensure accurate and timely reporting.
- Assist in the preparation of monthly JV financial statements and related reports.
- Oversee issuance and compliance with the regional credit card programs.
- Ensure proper invoice coding within our procurement system.
- Assist the project teams with Oracle project setup, closeout, and any related inquiries.
- Proactively monitor and report on accounts receivable to ensure timely collection.
- Financial analysis and ad hoc special projects.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
- 5+ years of experience working in commercial construction
- Experience with construction software. Oracle and CMIC preferred
- Strong analytical skills.
- Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills.
- Highly proficient with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office Applications
- Able to identify issues, take initiative and resolve problems.
- Collaborative team player who is an asset to the team and willing jump in as needed
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficient in delivering presentations and effective communication with diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders and team members.
