What to Expect
Battery cells are the common denominator for every Tesla product. Our product requirements demand ground-up cell architectures with state-of-the-art performance, manufactured at volumes that are orders of magnitude higher than the products they power. Our environment is fast-paced and incredibly exciting, so being passionate and self-motivated to push your limits is critical. Our team works with engineering groups across various disciplines, requiring strong communication skills and a team-first mentality. You will work alongside seasoned industry experts, high aptitude recent graduates, and people from every stage in between. We look for anyone with an exceptional ability to solve problems in both individual and team settings.
The Cell Materials & Product Development Team is looking for a Computational Materials Engineer to create multiscale modeling towards accelerating materials development and elucidating critical structure-process-property relationships as we scale these materials into electrode and cell. This is a highly cross-functional role that will require working across upstream cell design and materials development, modeling & CAE, downstream cell manufacturing and everything in-between.
What You’ll Do
- Leverage computational chemistry towards developing Tesla’s in-house cell at various scales (molecular, electrode, cell, manufacturing)
- Develop computational tools and modeling framework for evaluating electrochemical and electromechanical performance and stability of various materials in a battery cell
- Molecular modeling to elucidate structure-process-property relationships and interactions between materials in our electrode and manufacturing processes (e.g., mixing, calendaring)
- Use simulation and modeling to guide materials discovery and development for Tesla’s cell designs
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s Degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physical Chemistry or equivalent
- Deep fundamental understanding of electrochemistry and materials science
- Experience with scientific programming (e..g, Python, Matlab) and common computational chemistry software (e.g., Gaussian, VASP, or ORCA, etc.)
- Exposure to mesoscopic modeling concepts for different chemistries (e.g., coarse graining of polymers)
- Familiarity with working principals of Li-ion or other battery cell
