It takes many skills to work on design-build and design-bid-build projects in the engineering and construction industry, from forming and maintaining excellent relationships with clients and partners to successfully delivering projects, staying in step with current and future regulations, and actively seeking out the next project. We are looking for field engineers to join our leading-edge team, winning the highest-profile stormwater, wastewater and drinking water projects in northeast Illinois. Burns & McDonnell’s Chicago Regional office is looking for an Assistant Civil Engineer to support its growing presence in the Great Lakes water market. This is a position with the opportunity to travel across the Chicago region to projects during the construction phase. This position provides the opportunity to grow professionally within one of the industry’s leading firms. Potential projects include drinking water (treatment, storage, and distribution), wastewater (treatment, collection, and conveyance), and stormwater (collection, conveyance, detention, and green infrastructure).
The Assistant Civil Engineer will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer to assist in field activities such as site investigations, inspections, and assessments for Burns & McDonnell projects in a variety of locations. Tasks that the Assistant Civil Engineer will assist with include but are not limited to:
- Creating field reports and documentation of daily work performed on project sites.
- Producing accurate quantity data for use in generation of contractor pay estimates and material certification.
- Coordinating with designers as required for shop drawing reviews, requests for information and change orders.
- § Maintain communication with Project Managers throughout the course of the project so they are informed of site progress.
- § Maintain communication with Section Manager throughout the course of the project regarding project progress and issues.
- § Solve technical problems related to the project parameters.
- § Interface with client as needed.
- § Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.
- § Have the ability to work productively in an office setting during down time on project sites.
- § All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program. Required or
- Bachelor Degree in Civil or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Required
- Prior internship and/or related consulting experience Preferred
- Basic knowledge in standard civil engineering techniques, principles and procedures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
- Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)
- Basic computer skills (e.g. AutoCAD, MicroStation, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, PLS, PLS-CADD, RISA-3D, MathCADD), and civil analysis programs.
- Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated leadership skills.
- Engineers in Training-EIT Certification Preferred
- Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
- Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.
