The Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AIML) User Research team is seeking a passionate and experienced Principal User Researcher to help inform and influence AIML-powered technology and user experiences across our software, devices, and services. An ideal candidate is experienced in conducting human-centered research and analysis and able to work autonomously and collaboratively on a range of confidential and time-sensitive projects with cross-functional product teams in a fast-paced and creative work environment.
Description
As a member of our dynamic team, you will have the unique and exciting opportunity to influence the direction of upcoming products that will delight millions of Apple customers around the world every day! As a Principal User Researcher on our team, you will: – Work closely and collaboratively with engineers, PMs, designers, and data scientists to understand business needs and constraints to align on research goals, develop appropriate study designs, and complete in-person and remote user studies on a variety of Apple products and features – Extract insights about usability, user experience, and user sentiment from qualitative and quantitative data, and recommend product or feature improvements based on findings to engineering, design, PM, product marketing, and executives – Evolve research planning, processes and tools to support efficient and impactful data collection and communication – Work autonomously and mentor other researchers to support the goals of the research organization
Minimum Qualifications
- BS/MS in behavioral/social sciences, such as psychology, neuroscience, human-computer interaction, human factors, or related field, or equivalent industry experience
- 10+ years of experience in human-centered research (in-person and remote) for software and/or hardware products, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated experience designing and conducting user studies using established qualitative and quantitative methods (e.g. usability studies, interviewing, diary studies, questionnaire development and survey research, etc.)
- Proficient in analyzing large amounts of qualitative and quantitative data to identify themes, trends, and other results, and creating visualizations and informative presentations to communicate data, insights and recommendations effectively to all levels and disciplines of an organization
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D in in behavioral/social sciences, such as psychology, neuroscience, human-computer interaction, human factors, or related field, or equivalent industry experience
- Proficient using any data analysis and visualization software, and/or programming languages for data analysis (e.g. Matlab, JMP, SPSS, Python, R, Tableau, etc.). Experienced using spreadsheet and presentation software (e.g. Numbers, Excel, Keynote, PowerPoint, Adobe Illustrator, etc.)
- Prior research experience with virtual assistants, speech recognition, natural language understanding, voice input, smart home devices, artificial intelligence or machine learning
- Prior experience working in user research labs with recording equipment and specialized tools such as vision or motion tracking and/or simulators
- Ability to develop novel approaches to researching complex user experience problems
- Previous experience as a Product Manager or Strategy Consultant
Pay & Benefits
- At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $197,400 and $296,300, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple’s discretionary employee stock programs.
