Tesla is committed to hiring and developing diverse talent in all disciplines. This position will collaborate with multiple teams across Tesla to develop, optimize, and characterize electrolyte formulation for various up-and-coming materials to improve cell performance.
Our team is looking for a highly motivated candidate to contribute to our electrolyte development. The candidate will be responsible for supporting the elaboration of cell test plans to characterize cell performance, lifetime behavior, scalability, and overall integration of best-in-class electrolyte formulation for all cell technologies. Tesla is searching for a team focused candidate with strong electrochemical background and strong communication skills who wants to be challenged, wants to create and innovate, will thrive in a fast-paced environment and is self-motivated and disciplined.
- Contribute to our efforts to improve lithium-ion battery performance
- Be a key member of a cross functional team to help determine the ideal electrolyte chemistry and cell designs of our future products
- Support the development of new electrochemical/chemical tests to understand electrolyte degradation analysis and cell impact
- Support the development of new electrochemical/chemical tests to analyze electrolyte parameters, elucidate fundamental mechanisms leading to degradation or improvement, and identify optimization pathways
- Interpret and quantify degradation modes of various electrolytes in different battery chemistries and propose countermeasures
- Work with air-sensitive materials using a glove box and/or in a dry room
- Support developing new techniques for analyzing electrolyte materials or behaviors
- Support interpreting and quantifying degradation modes of various electrolyte materials in different battery chemistries
- University degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science, or equivalent major
- Familiar with electrochemistry, degradation mechanisms of batteries, and battery materials
- Experience with battery cyclers
- Proficient with MATLAB, Python, and/or similar data analysis tool
- Familiar with chemical analysis techniques for battery materials
- Ability to learn new concepts and methods from literature, propose design of experiments, and execute independently

What to Expect
We are looking for an Engineering Technician to support various engineering projects and perform experiments related to active materials research and development for Li-ion batteries. Candidates should have experience working in a chemistry lab environment and operating chemical analysis instruments.
What You’ll Do
- >60% of time spent performing hands-on tasks which may include building cells (coin and pouch), material synthesis and characterization, slurry mixing, electrode coating, keeping a good record of data
- Work closely with engineers to execute experiments as instructed
- Record build information in Excel sheets
- Handle air-sensitive and hazardous materials in a glove box, dry room, or fume hood
- Prepare chemical samples for characterization (SEM, titration, XRD, PSD, and more)
- Helping keep the lab safe and efficient
- Report any issues related to processes and assist in problem solving
What You’ll Bring
- 2+ years’ experience with air-sensitive materials and hazardous chemicals
- Above average manual dexterity and visual acuity are required in order to perform delicate assembly tasks.
- Working knowledge of Windows and MS Office
- Ability and passion to perform hands-on tasks
- Good communication skills
- High school diploma or equivalent. Engineering or chemistry related degree preferred.
- Hands-on lithium ion cell fabrication and testing (preferred but not required)

Expected Compensation
$21.00 – $59.00/hour + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
