What to Expect
The Electrical Field Quality Engineering team’s mission is to improve customer experience of Tesla products by reducing field issues, in collaboration with large cross-section of other engineering teams. The primary objective of this role is to root cause failures from the field, work cross-functionally for design changes and implement system/manufacturing controls to improve product quality. The successful candidate for this position must be a problem-solver at his/her core, have a strong quality & customer-focused mindset, and have the personal drive and stamina for relentless, continual improvement (personally and professionally).
What You’ll Do
- Lead cross-functional problem-solving teams to drive process and product improvements; use of QA methodologies to manage and facilitate issue resolution including root cause investigations and the development, implementation and monitoring of effective corrective and preventive actions
- Monitor products field performance, identify trending issues
- Perform technical root-cause analysis of vehicle systems (Low Voltage / Vehicle Controllers / Car Computer / Power Electronics)
- Drive containment and corrective actions implementation into manufacturing line / design / supplier
- Communicate field performance of the engineering system, gather buy-in from engineering peers and leadership on improvement priorities and urgency
- Participate in continuous improvement activities and take preventive actions
- Share Lessons Learned from previous field issues; Provide upfront feedback by participating in design reviews to ensure product performance, reliability, and manufacturability issues are identified and risks mitigated. (DFMEAs)
- Take part in ongoing optimization of the products and processes (performance, cost, technology)
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in Engineering or equivalent experience required. Electrical, Mechatronic; Power Electronics, Electronic or equivalent relevant experience
- Prior applicable experience desired; preferably in a hands-on role such as Failure Analysis / Manufacturing / Quality / Service in consumer electronics or automotive
- Specific training and demonstrated success in applying quality problem solving methods such as fishbone diagrams, FMEA, process capability analysis, hypothesis testing, DoE, SPC, etc.
- For entry level candidates, Co-ops, or participation in student competitions such as Formula SAE, Baja SAE; Solar vehicle
- The successful candidate for this position must have a broad technical background with the ability to work with engineering, manufacturing, service, and suppliers across a wide variety of issues. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are an absolute requirement to establish effective working relationships within Tesla and outside
- Exceptional problem solving and Failure Analysis, strong attention to detail and analytical thinking
- Ability to use tools and business system applications to manage, synthesize, and interpret data
- Programming Languages & Tools: SQL, Python, Minitab, JMP or similar are a strong plus
- Ability, willingness to travel domestically, and internationally (5% to 10%)
- Must be detail oriented, effectively handle multiple priorities, have a strong quality mindset and have the ability to meet tight deadlines
