What to Expect
Tesla’s Cell Engineering group is looking for a highly motivated mechanical engineer to work on Dry Electrode manufacturing equipment projects for equipment upgrades and new installations globally. This individual should be experienced with mechanical engineering, HVAC system design, piping system design and drafting of mechanical systems. As a Process & Mechanical Design Engineer you will join a cross-functional project engineering team responsible for scope development, concept design, project bidding, detailed design, fabrication drawings and construction/installation of Cell Engineering manufacturing equipment projects.
What You’ll Do
- This role will develop, scale up and optimize battery manufacturing equipment, focused heavily on Calendering, Slitting, and Coating equipment at multiple sites
- Provide advanced drafting and design services by preparing and maintaining construction drawings, facilities layouts, and engineering drawings
- Produce complex technical drawings including P&IDs, process flow diagrams, and pipe routing drawings
- Produce general arrangement drawings for mechanical equipment upgrades and new installations
- Develop simple to mid-level designs/layouts through fabrication level 3D models and spool drawings
- Prepare designs and bill of material estimates from general instruction
- Perform Field surveys and develop as-built drawings
- Thoroughly learn and understand existing processes and equipment to address ongoing technical challenges and identify step-change improvement opportunities, including blank-slate concepts
- Support design, development, and implementation of equipment modifications, improvements, and next generation tools from proof of concept through to full scale production to enable improved battery performance and/or cost
- Use data analysis tools to interpret and present validation data
What You’ll Bring
- Pipe flow modelling (AFT pipeflow, Aspen, or equivalent)
- Experience with large facility infrastructure design (cell manufacturing, semiconductors, Chemical processing facility, etc.)
- Must be proficient in 3D Modeling Software (REVIT, SolidWorks and/or Inventor)
- Must be proficient in 2D Drafting Software (AutoCAD, REVIT)
- Experience with piping system design and fabrication/joining methods
- Experience with HVAC and exhaust system design
- Experience with Process and Instrumentation Diagram design
- Experience with developing specifications
- Knowledge of engineering principles, codes, and standards
- The ideal candidate should be ready to push their limits, as they join a highly motivated and capable team to make unbelievable things become reality
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in mechanical engineering, interdisciplinary/integrated engineering, manufacturing engineering, physics, or equivalent
- 2+ years of mechanical equipment design required
- Proven strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and ability to apply them to equipment design and process development for high volume manufacturing
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to perform basic FEA for design validation
- Structured thinking and problem-solving abilities
- Desire to participate in an exciting team
